Why ‘dog freeze’ isn’t what you think: understanding pet cryopreservation

The term “dog freeze” often conjures up inaccurate images of pets literally being frozen after death. But true pet cryopreservation is a scientific process — not a deep-freeze myth. This article breaks down what pet cryonics really is, how it works, and why more pet owners are considering it a meaningful end-of-life option.

What people think “dog freeze” means

The internet is full of confusing stories and sensational headlines about pets being frozen after death. Unfortunately, this often leads to misunderstandings about what’s actually possible — and ethical — when it comes to preserving a beloved animal companion.

For some, the phrase “dog freeze” evokes:

  • Home freezer preservation
  • Freeze-drying taxidermy
  • Sci-fi scenarios of suspended animation

What is pet cryopreservation?

Pet cryopreservation is a process that preserves your pet at extremely low temperatures, aiming to maintain cellular and neurological structure in a stable, long-term state.

Unlike freezing, which forms damaging ice crystals, cryopreservation uses:

  • Cryoprotectants (a type of antifreeze) to replace bodily fluids
  • Vitrification, which turns tissue into a glass-like state without ice formation
  • Liquid nitrogen storage at –196°C

This process is used in cryobiology around the world — from preserving embryos to storing organs — and has now been adapted for end-of-life pet preservation.

The steps of pet cryopreservation

When your pet passes away (or is close to passing), we will arrange all necessary custom and logistics. Our specialized transportation partner will arrange to collect your pet and bring them safely to our facility in Rafz, Switzerland. Upon arrival, your pet will be preserved using your chosen method, either Standard or Advanced Preservation, and stored securely in a dedicated cryogenic dewar. Your pet will remain safely preserved indefinitely until future medical technology may allow for revival.

Standard Preservation
Our Standard Preservation option involves slowly cooling your pet to -196°C. This method is more affordable, offering a reliable way to preserve your pet’s form and essence. However, please note that ice crystals will form during the process, which can impact celular integrity.
Ideal for:
Pet owners seeking a cost-effective option or those in areas where pet body arrival at EBF within 12 hours is not feasible.
Key Benefits:
More affordable preservation
Simple, easy-to-plan process
Maintains pet’s form and essence over time
Cons:
Ice crystal formation may impact tissue integrity
Less detailed cellular preservation
What’s included:
Door-to-Door transportation, legal and customs
Secure indefinite long term storage
24/7 Emergency Support Line
Advanced Preservation
Advanced Preservation is a method where your pet is first treated with fixatives and cryoprotective solutions to prevent ice crystal formation (Immersion vitrifixation). The cooling process is carefully controlled to ensure cellular structures remain intact, offering the highest level of preservation quality.
Ideal for:
Pet owners who prioritize optimal tissue preservation and are seeking the most advanced option available.
Key Benefits:
Prevents ice crystal formation
Preserves cellular structures for higher quality preservation
Carefully monitored and controlled cooling process
Cons:
Higher cost than Standard Preservation
After passing, pet must arrive at EBF within 12 hours, kept at 4°C
What’s included:
Door-to-Door transportation, legal and customs
Secure indefinite long term storage
24/7 Emergency Support Line

Is this the same as freeze-drying or taxidermy?

No. Freeze-drying is a form of preservation for display — often used for pets but unrelated to the goal of revival. Taxidermy, meanwhile, preserves external appearance, not internal biology.

Cryopreservation aims to preserve identity and brain structure, with the idea that if future science advances far enough, restoration may be possible.

It’s not about memorialization. It’s about potential continuity.

Why people choose cryopreservation for pets

Losing a pet is a devastating experience. Some owners take comfort in memorials, cremation, or burial. Others — especially those already interested in human cryonics — see cryopreservation as a way to keep the option of future reunion alive.

Reasons people choose pet cryonics include:

  • A desire to avoid irreversible decay
  • A scientific worldview that values preservation
  • The hope that revival technologies may one day extend to animals
  • A sense of peace in knowing they did everything possible for their companion

While there are no guarantees, cryopreservation provides a bridge to future possibility.

How much does it cost?

Pet cryopreservation is far more affordable than human cryonics. The cost depends on your pet’s species and size, but services start around a few thousand euros.

You can use our pet cryopreservation calculator to get a customized estimate and explore options.

Where are pets stored?

Preserved pets are housed in the same state-of-the-art cryonics facilities as human patients, in specialized dewars. Tomorrow.bio partners with the European Biostasis Foundation (EBF) in Switzerland, offering:

  • Secure, long-term liquid nitrogen storage
  • Temperature stability at –196°C
  • Facilities designed for decades or even centuries of safe preservation
  • Separate dewars for pets of different sizes

This isn’t about “freezing your dog” — it’s about entrusting them to a process grounded in scientific care.

Are there ethical concerns?

Any new approach to end-of-life care can raise important questions. But pet cryopreservation is based on the same principles as veterinary medicine and human cryonics:

  • Informed consent from the owner
  • No suffering (only performed after legal death)
  • Respect for animal dignity
  • No false promises about revival

Cryonics does not claim to bring pets back today. It simply preserves the possibility.

Understanding the term “dog freeze”

The phrase “dog freeze” has become a kind of shorthand — but it’s misleading. No pet is frozen like a popsicle. Instead, pet cryopreservation is:

  • Structured
  • Ethical
  • Backed by biology and technology
  • A way to extend hope into the future

Let’s stop imagining deep freezers and start talking about real, responsible preservation.

About Tomorrow.bio

At Tomorrow.bio, we are dedicated to advancing the science of cryopreservation with the goal of giving people and pets a second chance at life. As Europe’s leading cryopreservation provider, we focus on rapid, high-quality standby, stabilization, and storage of terminal patients — preserving them until future medical technologies may allow revival and treatment.

Our mission is to make cryopreservation a reliable and accessible option for everyone. We believe that no life — human or animal — should end because current medical capabilities fall short.
